What makes a YouTube title work
A good title does two jobs: it tells the right viewer what they'll get, and it opens a small question they want closed. The titles this tool writes follow a few rules that hold up across channels:
- Specific beats vague. "Why Rome fell in 476" beats "The fall of an empire".
- Under 60 characters, so it isn't cut off on phones and in search.
- Curiosity without lying. If the video doesn't answer the promise, viewers leave and YouTube notices.
- Shorts titles can be shorter: the video is on screen at the same time, so the title only needs the hook.
- The important words first. On a phone, people read the first three or four words. Put the subject there.
The five styles
| Style | Example for "Why the Roman Empire fell" |
|---|---|
| Curious | The Empire That Rotted From the Inside |
| Bold | Rome Didn't Fall in a Day |
| How-to | How Rome Lost the West in One Century |
| List | 5 Reasons the Roman Empire Fell |
| Question | Why Did the Roman Empire Really Fall? |
Try two or three styles for the same topic. The best title is often a mix: the specific subject of one with the shape of another.
How to pick the right title
- Say it out loud. If it sounds like an ad, it reads like one.
- Check it against the video. Every promise in the title should be answered in the first minute, or in the first few seconds of a Short.
- Match the thumbnail. The title and the opening frame should tell one story together, not repeat each other word for word.
- Test later. Change the title after a few days if a video is getting views from search but few clicks. You can come back for a fresh set at any time.
Titles in Urdu, Hindi and other languages
Pick the language and the titles come back in its own script: Urdu in Urdu script, Hindi in Devanagari, Arabic in Arabic. A title in the viewer's own language reads naturally to that audience and tells them at a glance that the video is for them. If your audience searches in English as well, you can put a few English words after the title in the same line.
From title to video
Once you have a title you like, click Turn it into a video: ContentRoof writes the script, records a natural voice, and animates every sentence with drawings, maps and charts, with word-by-word captions and no watermark. Its post kit also writes the description, tags and hashtags for the finished video from the same script.
