A terrifying Russian wizard hid his immortality inside a caged parrot, and a hero caught it.
Koschei was the eternal enemy of Russian folk tales. He could not be killed, no matter how hard heroes tried.
His secret was a black apple hidden inside an egg. That egg lived inside a duck, which lived inside a hare.
The hare was locked in a chest buried on the remote island of Buyan. Yet one version says his heart was in a parrot.
The hero Ivan Tsarevich set out to find this weakness. He had to travel to the farthest edge of the world.
His magical horse guided him through a seven year journey. Finally, he stood before the caged bird.
Ivan tried three times to catch the parrot. On the last try, he grabbed it and broke the cage open.
The long travel led to the moment he held the bird.
The immortal wizard died because his life was in a tiny, noisy parrot. Follow for more.
